A two-year trial (1992/94) was carried out in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment in order to test the efficiency of intercropping between vetch (Vicia sativa L.) cv. Pietranera and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cv. Jaidor, in relation to seed and biomass yield, LER (Land Equivalent Ratio), CR (Competitive Ratio) and weed biomass.

A factorial design with three replications was arranged, comparing: a) the two pure stands (350 and 150 germinable seeds m-2 for barley and vetch respectively); b) mixture in additive series and replacement series; c) alternate rows, inside row mixture and broadcast. As regards both barley and vetch, higher equivalent yields than pure stands were observed; moreover, LER always reached values higher than unit.

Vetch showed a lower competitive ability (CR) than barley in all of the examined thesis. Barley presence in intercropping improved efficiency in weed control.
