Forage legumes grown for seed production can play an important role in sustainable crop systems, especially in the dry areas.  This paper presents the results of a research that was conducted to evaluate the seed production of V.narbonensis as affected by sowing date with the purpose of introducing this species in sustainable crop systems of marginal areas of southern Italy.  The trial was conducted for a two-year period (1988/1989-1989/1990); two ecotypes of V. narbonensis (1495 and 1496) collected in southern Italy from Iannelli and three sowing dates with monthly intervals from the end of October to the end of December were compared.  The results show seed productions higher than 2 t ha-1 with the best sowing date in both years (October sowing), also under limited rainfall during the crop cycle while the delay in the sowing date (December sowing) reduced the yield components and the grain yield.
