About Us AGROTECHNICAL FACTORS AND SEED YIELD IN COMMON VETCH (VICIA SATIVA L.) IN SOUTHERN ITALY 1 - EFFECTS OF ROW SPACINGS AND SOWING RATES OF VETCH AND BARLEY
G. Pacucci and C. Troccoli Istituto di Agronomia generale e Coltivazioni erbacee, Università di Bari Via Amendola 165/A, 70126 Bari (Italy)
Vetch is one of the most important species used in autumn-spring grassland, in association with other leguminous (pigeon bean) and/or with Gramineae (barley, oats, common wheat) that are grown under dry conditions in Southern Italy. As regards the major factors of the cultural technique for seed production relating these species, the existing experimentation is quite poor. The optimal sowing rate seems to be ranged between 50 and 80 kg ha-1; about row spacing, the 40-60 cm spacings favour better yield results. The prostrate habit of vetch causes considerable seed losses at harvest; associating the vetch with some Gramineae it is possible to reduce seed losses by 50%. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of row spacings, sowing rate of vetch and sowing rate of barley used as "support " on vetch seed yield. The results obtained indicate that the most recommended row spacing is 40÷50 cm ; the vetch sowing rate to use should not necessarily exceed 60 kg ha-1; the pure vetch crop has given the best yield results, sharply higher than those obtained in association with barley as support, due to competition.
